Chapter Eleven

My stomach lurched as my surroundings blurred into a swirling whirl of blue—land, sky, then land again. The wind roared past me in a deafening howl, almost drowning out my thoughts as it whipped through my hair, stung my eyes, and sent my robe fluttering wildly.

This is it. This is really happening. If I don’t figure this out right now, then . . .

All of Dean Celestine’s flying lessons, and her words of guidance during them, surged through my mind, more desperately than ever before as the swirling ground rushed closer. My grip tightened around my staff as I silently begged the rune to envelop me—as if it could somehow shield me from a brutal, plunging death.

But the ground was getting nearer and nearer, showing no signs of slowing. This was really how it would end. Below, villagers appeared to be screaming in horror as they noticed what was happening. A final, desperate plea to the rune burst through my mind like a bolt of lightning:

Make the rune encompass you, and then give yourself up to it! Make it encompass you, and then let it take you! COME ON, NATE! DAMMIT!

I didn’t just want to fly anymore—I needed it!

Too late! I had seconds left. This was it!

I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for impact—just moments before I splattered into oblivion.

. . . I felt nothing. The crash never came. Or had it? Had it happened so fast that I simply didn’t register it? A swift, painless release from existence—was that what this was?

Almost reluctantly, I slowly opened my eyes—and there the ground was. Earthy soil and green blades of grass, so close that they nearly brushed against my nose. But they had yet to touch me. Then the realization hit me as I slowly looked around—I was hovering, suspended in the air with my arms and legs spread wide, like the outstretched wings of a butterfly, mere inches above the natural floor of Oakmont.

“Holy shit,” I whispered, my breath trembling as it rustled the blades of grass. I swallowed hard. “Holy shit,” I repeated, barely believing it myself.

Gasps rippled through the crowd as I slowly lifted myself upright, still hovering above the ground. My eyes darted around, wild with disbelief, as it all sunk further in—I did it. I was really doing this.

A distinct euphoria flooded my mind, reminiscent of the exhilaration I’d felt soaring on the griffin a year ago. I was suspended in the air—free, weightless, unbound by the gravity that had held me down for so long. As that pure, unshackled joy took over, I drifted higher, rising five, maybe ten feet into the air.

“Holy fuck!” I gasped with a grin, my arms and legs flailing slightly as I instinctively tried to steady myself.

“Are you okay, young man?” an older elf woman from below hollered out to me.

“No,” I laughed, still half in disbelief. “I’m—I’m fantastic!” I commanded the rune around me, feeling more connected to it than ever before, willing it to lift me higher. “This is something else .
